Azure Synapse to Microsoft Fabric Migration

Azure Synapse to Microsoft Fabric Migration

Australia's Azure Synapse to Microsoft Fabric migration specialists - we move your dedicated SQL pools, Spark and pipelines onto Fabric's Warehouse and OneLake, without breaking downstream reports.

Replatform with Confidence: Australia's Synapse to Fabric Specialists

Microsoft has shifted all new analytics investment to Microsoft Fabric, leaving Azure Synapse in maintenance mode - and some components, such as Synapse Data Explorer, have already been retired. Report Simple is Australia's specialist Azure Synapse to Microsoft Fabric migration partner, replatforming your dedicated SQL pools, Spark workloads and Synapse pipelines onto Fabric's Warehouse, Lakehouse and OneLake. Our local team inventories your Synapse estate, uses the native Fabric migration assistants to convert schema, code and pipelines, then runs the old and new platforms side by side so nothing downstream breaks. You move off a decaying platform onto an AI-ready foundation, without the always-on compute cost of dedicated SQL pools.

Off a Dead-End Stack

We move your Synapse workloads onto Fabric's OneLake foundation, so you leave a platform Microsoft has stopped investing in and gain Direct Lake, Copilot and native AI.

Fixed-Fee Migration

You get a fixed-fee migration scoped from a proper assessment, and right-sizing Fabric capacity cuts the always-on compute cost your dedicated SQL pools run up around the clock.

Faster, No Refresh

On Fabric your warehouse and lakehouse feed Power BI through Direct Lake, querying billions of rows with no scheduled refresh and none of the always-on cost of dedicated SQL pools.

AI-Ready Foundation

Your data lands in OneLake ready for Copilot, Fabric Data Agents and notebooks, turning a forced replatform into the foundation for the AI workloads your business wants next.

Proven AU Specialists

Connecting and migrating data platforms to Power BI and Fabric is what we do across 574 projects for 190 Australian clients, delivered as a dual-run migration with zero downtime.

Our Synapse to Fabric Migration Services

Synapse Estate Assessment & Plan

Start with certainty, not guesswork. We inventory your entire Synapse estate - dedicated and serverless SQL pools, Spark pools, notebooks, Synapse and Azure Data Factory pipelines, linked services and Data Explorer databases - and run Microsoft's built-in readiness assessments to grade every artefact. You get a fixed-fee migration roadmap that decides lift-and-shift versus modernise per workload, sizes your Fabric capacity, and flags the T-SQL and Spark blockers before they bite.

Dedicated SQL Pool to Warehouse

Move your data warehouse onto Fabric properly. We use the Fabric Migration Assistant to convert your dedicated SQL pool schema, data and code - tables, views, stored procedures and security - into a Fabric Warehouse, then hand-fix what no tool can: external tables, table-valued functions, datetimeoffset columns and IDENTITY behaviour that Fabric handles differently. Indexes and TDE fall away because Fabric optimises and encrypts automatically, and SQL logins move to Microsoft Entra ID.

Spark & Serverless SQL Migration

Bring your data engineering across without rewriting from scratch. We migrate Synapse Spark pools, notebooks and job definitions to Fabric Data Engineering using the Synapse-to-Fabric Spark assistant, refactoring what it cannot - mssparkutils to notebookutils, linked services to Fabric connections, and lake databases to Fabric schemas. Serverless SQL pools become Lakehouse SQL analytics endpoints, with external-table views replaced by Delta tables and OneLake shortcuts over your existing ADLS data.

Pipelines & Ingestion Replatform

Keep your data flowing throughout the move. We convert Synapse and Azure Data Factory pipelines to Fabric Data Factory using the native migration experience, remap linked services to Fabric connections, and rebuild mapping dataflows as Dataflow Gen2. Where you relied on Synapse Link, we switch you to zero-ETL Mirroring into OneLake. Spark items migrate first so every pipeline activity lands on a real Fabric item, and triggers stay disabled until each connection is validated.

Dual-Run Cutover, Fixed-Fee

Land the migration without a big-bang risk. We run your Synapse and Fabric platforms in parallel, compare row counts and query results, and benchmark performance under Microsoft Entra security before repointing a single report or application. Only once everything reconciles do we cut over and decommission Synapse. It is delivered as a fixed-fee, staged project by Australian Fabric specialists, so your data platform team keeps shipping while we move the foundation beneath them.

Our Proven Synapse to Fabric Migration Process

Our senior specialists assess your Synapse estate, migrate it in staged waves, and run both platforms side by side so nothing downstream breaks.

1

Assess & Inventory

We inventory every Synapse artefact - SQL pools, Spark jobs, pipelines, linked services and Data Explorer databases - and run Microsoft's readiness assessments to grade each one. From this we decide lift-and-shift versus modernise per workload, size your Fabric capacity, and identify the T-SQL and Spark blockers. You receive a fixed-fee migration roadmap with a clear budget before anything moves.

Pilot Wave & Convert

2

We migrate a representative pilot first - typically one warehouse and a Spark workload - using the Fabric migration assistants, then hand-fix what they cannot convert. Schema, stored procedures, notebooks and pipelines are rebuilt and validated on Fabric while Synapse keeps running. Proving the patterns on a pilot removes the risk before we scale to the full estate.

Dual-Run & Cutover

3

We migrate the remaining workloads, then run Synapse and Fabric in parallel - reconciling row counts, query results and performance under Microsoft Entra security. Only once everything matches do we repoint reports and applications and decommission Synapse. Your team receives handover training on Fabric, and we remain available to optimise capacity and cost as usage grows.

Synapse to Fabric Migration FAQs

Is Azure Synapse being discontinued?

Microsoft has not announced an end-of-life date for Azure Synapse, but it is effectively in maintenance mode - all new analytics investment now goes to Microsoft Fabric, the named successor. Some components have already been retired (the Synapse Data Explorer preview ended in October 2025) and Spark runtimes are reaching end-of-support, so the platform is quietly decaying even though the core still runs. The practical question is not when it will be switched off, but when you move before the capability gap becomes a problem.

For the full picture of building on Fabric, see our Microsoft Fabric consulting page.

How do I migrate from Azure Synapse to Microsoft Fabric?

You migrate Synapse to Fabric workload by workload, not in one move: dedicated SQL pools become a Fabric Warehouse, Spark pools and notebooks move to Fabric Data Engineering, and Synapse pipelines become Fabric Data Factory pipelines. Microsoft provides native migration assistants that convert schema, code and pipelines, but each needs hand-finishing - T-SQL that does not auto-convert, Spark utilities and linked services. We assess your estate, migrate in staged waves, and run both platforms side by side before cutting over.

Can I upgrade Synapse to Fabric in place?

No - there is no in-place upgrade from Azure Synapse to Microsoft Fabric. A dedicated SQL pool cannot be flipped into a Fabric Warehouse; the data has to be extracted from Synapse and reloaded into OneLake's open Delta format, and code must be converted because Fabric does not have full T-SQL parity - external tables, table-valued functions, datetimeoffset and IDENTITY all behave differently. That is exactly why a staged, assisted migration - rather than a switch - is the safe path.

How long does a Synapse to Fabric migration take?

A single Synapse workload - one warehouse or a set of Spark jobs - typically migrates in around 4 to 8 weeks, while a full multi-workload estate is a phased program that runs over several months. Spark and pipeline workloads usually move fastest; dedicated SQL pools take longer because of T-SQL conversion and data reloads. We scope the timeline against your actual estate in the assessment, and stage the work so the business keeps running on Synapse until each workload is proven on Fabric.

How much does it cost to migrate from Synapse to Fabric?

We deliver Synapse to Fabric migrations as fixed-fee projects, so you know the cost before we start rather than facing an open-ended engagement. The figure depends on how many SQL pools, Spark workloads and pipelines you move and how much you modernise along the way, which we confirm in a short scoping call - and right-sizing Fabric capacity often cuts the always-on compute cost of dedicated SQL pools. Specialist Australian consultants work at $200 to $250 or more per hour for ad-hoc work, but defined migrations are always fixed-price.
